The Best Way to Get Pet Hair Off a Couch (By Fabric Type)

If you live with a cat or a dog, you know the routine: vacuum the sofa, sit down, stand up covered in fur. Removing fur from the couch is only half the fix. The other half is removing it before it gets there.

Start at the source: the undercoat

Most fur on furniture is loose undercoat. Two or three short brushing sessions a week with an undercoat rake or deshedding comb remove it before it ends up on the cushions. Go with the direction of the coat and keep sessions short. Stop if the skin looks red. Don't try to cut out tight mats; leave those to a groomer.

• Run a dryer cycle with no heat and a couple of wool dryer balls before washing furry blankets. It loosens hair so it lands in the lint trap.
