What to Bring on a Long Dog Walk or Hike: A Simple Water and Snack Checklist

How much water to carry, when to offer it, and a packing list for long walks, hikes and road-trip rest stops with your dog.

Dogs can't sweat the way we do, so on long walks they lose heat mostly by panting, and that uses water. Carrying water for your dog is one of the easiest ways to keep outings comfortable.

How much water to bring

A common starting point is about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day, more in heat or during hard exercise. For a walk or hike, plan on offering water every 15–30 minutes, and more often in warm weather. Your vet can tell you what's right for your dog.

Dog size Short walk (under 1 hr) Hike or long walk (1–3 hrs)
Small (under 25 lb) A few sips at the halfway point 8–16 oz
Medium (25–60 lb) One drink break 16–32 oz
Large (60 lb+) One or two drink breaks 32 oz or more, plus a refill plan

The packing list

  • [ ] Water for your dog (separate from yours)
  • [ ] Something to drink from: a bowl, or a bottle with a built-in trough
  • [ ] A small snack or kibble for longer outings
  • [ ] Poop bags
  • [ ] Leash and ID tag with your phone number
  • [ ] Towel for muddy paws (keep it in the car)
  • [ ] For hot days: plan shade breaks and walk early or late

Signs your dog needs a break

Heavy panting that doesn't slow down, a very red tongue, lagging behind, or looking for shade. Stop, offer water and rest. Heatstroke is an emergency. If your dog seems confused, wobbly or collapses, get to a vet right away.

Road trips

Offer water at every rest stop, keep a towel in the back seat, and never leave a dog in a parked car. Temperatures inside rise fast, even with windows cracked.

Our pick: the Walk & Water 2-in-1 Travel Bottle holds water and a snack in one bottle, and leftover water drains back in. It's part of the Road Trip Kit with a back-seat hammock and grooming mitt.
